The style of this forward-looking documentary is appealing. It compares the reality of life of former GDR citizens with that of migrants. There are obviously some similarities here: The feeling of being left behind – which according to studies on the income of both groups proves to be true, the feeling of having lost one’s homeland – having to start again, the feeling of not receiving recognition for what has been achieved. The presenter Mitri Sirin, himself the child of guest workers who came to Germany in 1960, talks to entrepreneurs, descendants of former guest workers, East and West Germans, former contract workers and, last but not least, Angela Merkel.
She gives her first personal interview after her candidacy for chancellor. Even her East German past was interpreted as “ballast”. That’s why she didn’t talk about her identity in politics for a long time. Why is racism more pronounced in the East than in the West? The former Chancellor puts it down to competitive situations and minority biographies on both sides.
Conclusion: We still need to work on a real turnaround. “So that our hearts can rejoice in diversity.” Worth seeing!
